Part 1: Controls
D-Pad - Movement on maps & menus
A - Interaction/Confirmation
B - Cancel from menu/close monster screen
Start - Show monsters on map/show game stats on monster screen
Select - Organize items in menu/close monster screen/show map of mystic world
Misc: You can confirm an empty name on the monster naming screen to generate a randomized name for your monster.
Part 2: Mechanics
2.1. Battle Mechanics
You can choose to command your monsters in battles or give them a Plan. Plan gives you a set of 4 options. 'Charge' makes the monster use whatever gives the highest damage output. 'Mixed' makes the monster use buffs and debuffs as priority over dealing damage. 'Cautious' makes the monster focus on healing and defending (but will sometimes attack). 'Command' lets you choose basic attack, defend, or a special skill.
Because you can only use the Command option in wild battles, it's a good idea to get comfortable with the AI and adjust your monsters' skills to accommodate the likely plan you will be using for each monster.
The monster will stay on its plan after you select it the first time, so you don't need to keep selecting it. The exception to this is if your monster is very wild - selecting the same plan over and over can help reduce your monster's wildness. Wild monsters will not always listen at first, but repeating a plan for them helps shape them toward doing what you want. Repeating a plan also helps shape their personalities in a beneficial way to battling under that plan. Shaping the monster's personality can sometimes result in bonus critical hits, greater spell success rate, and/or MP-free healing, depending on their personality and plan.
Monster intelligence (INT) also plays a role in battle mechanics. Low intelligence will prevent monsters from adapting to a dynamic situation, i.e. if they are targeting a monster that their ally defeats, a monster with low INT will not redirect their attack to a different enemy. Monsters with low INT will also tend not to take enemy resistances into account when selecting which skill to use in battle.
2.2. Breeding Mechanics
For the purposes of this guide, 'Basic monster' refers to a monster taken from the wild or hatched from a gift egg (i.e. from the farm SkyDragon or Medal Man prizes). 'Natural skill' refers to the 3 skills that are inherent to any individual monster species, which can be viewed in the monster library after recruiting a monster.
2.2.a. + Values and Level Caps
Each monster has a level cap. Basic monsters tend to have a very low level cap. Each generation of monsters, meaning higher + values, that you breed will have a higher level cap than that of their parents. + Values do not appear to have any affect on stat growth (this was tested for monsters of the same species at +12 vs basic, and +22 vs basic; each pair had exactly the same stats per level).
Incidentally, the stat caps are 999 for HP, MP, Attack, and Defense; 511 for Agility; 255 for Wisdom and Wildness.
2.2.b. Skill Inheritance
Every monster species is able to learn at least 3 skills. Basic monsters will only have access to their natural skills. The exception to this is monsters that you steal from foreign masters, who always have an additional set of 3 skills and can learn their natural skills upon leveling up. This is the only way to acquire a basic monster with access to more than 3 skills.
Any monster you get from breeding will have access to their own natural skills and the natural skills from their parents, whether or not the parents have learned those skills at the time of breeding. This gives any +1 monster access to potentially 9 skills, of which you can keep 8.
Baby monsters will only inherit the natural skills from their grandparents if those skills were learned by the parents at the time of breeding.
I'll illustrate this with an example. At the beginning of the game you're given Slib, a basic Slime. Slimes have Gira, Radiance, and Sacrimaju as natural skills. Slib will learn Gira before level 10, but not the other two skills. Let's say you breed Slib at level 10 with a female Dracky, and you get a WingSlime as the offspring. This WingSlime will still be able to inherit Radiance and Sacrimaju from its father's natural skills even though Slib didn't learn them before breeding. However, if you were to breed WingSlime with another monster before it learned Radiance and Sacrimaju, those skills are now lost - the offspring cannot learn them.
For this reason, it's a good idea to level monsters in your party if you intend to pass down skills to their offspring.
2.2.c. Pedigree
Simply put, the pedigree determines which monster family your pair's offspring will be born into. If you choose any monster from the Slime family as the pedigree, the offspring will be in the Slime family. If you choose a monster from the Plant family as the pedigree, the offspring will be in the Plant family. The exception to this rule is the creation of monsters in the Boss, or ???, family - some of the 'easy' ones are created using strong monsters from the other families as the pedigree.
If you choose two monsters from the same family to breed, the offspring will almost always be the same species as the monster you chose as the pedigree. There are exceptions to this, as well, however. Some rare monsters can be created by breeding two of the same monster species, and for some of these combinations it will depend on the + values associated with the offspring. (More about this in Section 4.)
2.2.d. Baby Stat Calculations
The offspring's stats at level 1 are dependent on the stats of the parents at the time of breeding. More specifically, each of the offspring's stats will be roughly a quarter of their parents' combined stats. For example, if the father monster has 100 Attack, and the mother monster has 100 Attack, The baby monster will be hatched with an attack stat of around 50.
You can give your baby monsters great starting values by raising the parent monsters to high levels before you breed them.
Part 3: Monster Farm
When you have a full party of 3 monsters, you can leave a total of 17 monsters on the farm. By reducing your party to 1 monster, you can leave up to 19 on the farm. In order to leave more than 19 monsters on the farm, you have to make the first set of monsters go to sleep - after which point you may leave 17-19 more. Simply put, you can have a maximum of 20 monsters awake at one time, and a maximum of 19 sleeping.
Monsters on the farm will gradually increase in wildness. They will also get approximately 1/5 of the exp you gain in battle, and will not gain skills upon level up. Any skills missed via leveling up on the farm can be gained by taking the monster with you - upon the next level up in your party, the monster will gain any skills it could have learned. As with any skill, these are still dependent on meeting the necessary values for each stat.
Monsters who are sleeping on the farm will not increase in wildness, and will not receive any exp kickback from battles. The main benefit of making monsters go to sleep is to make room on the farm for taming more monsters, but it can also be an easy way to store strong party monsters if you need to raise weaker monsters for breeding. This way, your strong party members won't become wild while they're on the farm and you can easily use them again later.
Sleeping vs waking is an all-or-nothing mechanic. In this game, you cannot choose monsters individually to sleep or wake up. There is a tedious way to circumvent this using your party. Let's say you have an IceTitan you want to breed later, once you find a LavaTitan to breed it with. But you're running out of space on your farm and the LavaTitan still hasn't shown up. It would be best to make the IceTitan sleep until you need it, but you want to keep the rest of the monsters awake so they can gain levels. Temporarily leave one of your party members on the farm and take the IceTitan in its place. Make all of the monsters on the farm go to sleep, then leave the IceTitan on the farm as the only awake monster. Now you can make IceTitan go to sleep, and the rest of your monsters will be awake again. In fact, you can do this with 2 monsters at a time if you need to.
Part 4: Monsters
There are a total of 215 monster species that you can collect in this game. The only reward for filling your monster library is some new NPC dialogue (and bragging rights, of course). Whether you're interested in 100% completion or not, this section of the guide will give you info on all 215 monsters so that you can plan your breeding and skills.
For the purposes of this section, family name (SLIME, DRAGON, etc) will be written in capital letters to distinguish between monsters whose species name is the same as their family name. In each breeding combination stated in this guide, the first monster listed is the pedigree. When multiple monsters can be used in a combination to make the same monster, that group of monsters will be in [brackets] and separated by /slashes. If a breeding combination has [multiple/monsters/in/brackets] x [more/monsters/in/brackets] then you can use any monster from the first group with any monster from the second group.

Part 5: Skills
There are a total of 155 skills in Dragon Quest Monsters. Every species of monster has a set of 3 natural skills it can learn. Monsters also learn skills by inheriting them from their parents or from combining their knowledge of other skills. Each skill has specific requirements for level and other attributes, all of which must be met in order for the monster to learn the skill. It is, however, possible for monsters that you acquire from the wild or from other masters to have skills they would not normally be able to learn based on their species and attributes.

Part 6: Items
There are a total of 43 different items in Dragon Quest Monsters. While most can be bought in GreatTree by the end of the game, certain shops only unlock after you make progress. For the purposes of this guide the shops are numbered 1 through 4, starting with the first shop you see and progressing clockwise in the order they open. Note that while you can see Shop 4 from the beginning, you can't purchase items from it until after Shop 2 and 3.
Foreign masters that are Red Warriors or Yellow Heroes will give you 2 items after defeating them, provided you have the space. The first item they give you is always a Chimera Wing. The second is random and can be at least 42 of the 43 items (I've never gotten a Silver Harp from them before).
The coliseum you enter from the mystic worlds will award you with a random item for every 3 rounds of battle after your first set of 3 rounds - again, provided you have the space. These items are random, but usually more rarer/advanced than the items you can buy from Shop 1.
The mystic shop is a shop you can access on any floor with a multiple of 3 while traveling in the mystic worlds. (See the Travel Gates section for more information on special rooms.)
Due to the random nature of items located in mystic worlds, and given to you as prizes from foreign masters and the coliseum, these methods of obtaining items will only be listed when there is not a more reliable method.

Part 7: Travel Gates
Travel gates are the "dungeons" of DQM. In game lore, wild monsters have been banished behind the travel gates in order to protect humans. Each of the gates consist of a series of procedurally-generated floors, some with identifiable patterns and others more random, ending in a final floor where you face the boss of the gate in a scene from one of the prior main series Dragon Quest games (I-VI). There are a total of 31 travel gates in the game, and you get a special reward in post-game if you've gone through them all and defeated the boss of each, though only 3 of them are absolutely necessary to complete during the course of the story.
The travel gates can be divided into two groups: 'Chamber Gates', and 'Bonus Gates'. The Chamber Gates are 22 different travel gates you can access via the Chamber of Travel Gates, and are unlocked after your victories in the arena. These gates tend toward longer, randomized floors, and have a lower chance of spawning foreign monster masters on each floor. Bonus Gates are the 9 gates you unlock in different parts of GreatTree, usually by doing a favour for an NPC. These gates tend toward shorter floors with recognizable patterns (or a 4-screen randomized floor) and have a higher chance of spawning foreign monster masters.
In any travel gate, floors with a multiple of 3 (3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, and 27) have a chance of becoming a special room. Some of these rooms are considered safe zones where you can restore your monsters or obtain items; others will be more dangerous.
The special rooms are as follows:
Church - Fully heal your party and save your game.
Shop - Buy recovery items, sell items for full price, and save your game.
Treasure room - You can open 6 or 8 treasure chests (sometimes all but one will be Mimics), and save your game.
Coliseum - You will fight 3 battles against another master, after which you are offered a prize if you fight 3 more (and for every subsequent set of 3 battles, until you either decline or run out of inventory space).
Forest Maze - Reminiscent of a certain forest in Dragon Quest V, this maze contains looping paths and there is only one way to the exit.
Movement Tile Maze - There are two versions of this maze, inspired by the dungeons with movement tiles in Dragon Quest IV.
Regular Maze - There are two versions of a maze that doesn't have looping paths or movement tiles, just static screens you have to navigate.

Part 8: Important NPCs
While most of the NPCs in GreatTree only refresh their text a few times throughout the game - and I fully endorse talking to them all to see how their personalities evolve - there are several who are absolutely worth visiting even if you're not much of a social butterfly.
8.1. Medal Man
The Medal Man is located on the uppermost level of GreatTree. To get to him, you head right from the arena and go up the long stairs. As in other Dragon Quest games, he collects Small Medals and will exchange prizes for them when you bring him certain amounts. His prizes are as follows:
13 Small Medals - ZapBird
18 Small Medals - Trumpeter
25 Small Medals - Dentasaur
30 Small Medals - Stray Metal
Furthermore, you can get his Metal Slime companion to open a travel gate for you after handing in 13 medals.
You can get a total of 8 Small Medals in GreatTree (though they are not all available at once). The rest, you will simply have to get lucky enough to find on your journeys through the travel gates.
8.2. Queen of GreatTree
The Queen of GreatTree is located in her private chamber, which you access via a secret set of stairs in a room behind the arena. The drunk man in the tavern will give you a hint for how to make those stairs appear.
After you're able to breed monsters, the queen will have specific requests for you. Don't worry - she won't take your monsters. She just wants to see them, and will give you an item each time you show her one.
Her requests before D Class are as follows:
WingSlime - reward is MarbledMeat
KingSlime - reward is INTseed
FloraBird - reward is AGLseed
CurseLamp - reward is DEFseed
MetalSlime - reward is LifeNut
Her requests after D Class are as follows:
KillerApe - reward is ATKseed
HornBeetl - reward is MysticNut
Reaper - reward is ScaryBook
FireBird - reward is CheatBook
Her requests in post-game are as follows:
WightKing - reward is FunnyBook
KingLeo - reward is SmartBook
PrismBird - reward is KindBook
Armorpion - reward is QuestBook
RoseLash - reward is LifeNut
GoldGolem - reward is SmallMedal
Divinegon - reward is SmallMedal
8.3. NPC Breeding Opportunities
There are several NPCs in this game who will build relationships with Terry and offer to breed monsters (or in one case, gift you with a monster). These opportunities often produce monsters with high stats compared to breeding your own monsters, and give you a chance to get rare or difficult to obtain monsters earlier than you normally would. You can choose a monster of any gender to breed with an NPC's monster, because their monsters have no set gender!
Whenever you receive an offer to breed with another master, you should take them up on their offer before you advance to the next class or advance the plot - otherwise, the opportunity will be lost.
In the order of availability, the NPC breeding opportunities are as follows:
After E Class - Teto (IceTitan)
After E Class - Warrior in tavern (FlyingCat)
After E Class - Mickey (LizardMan)
After Quake - Machiko (Wyvern)
After Quake - Medal Man (FangSlime)

Part 9: Foreign Monster Masters
Foreign Monster Masters are the monster masters you see wandering around in the mystic worlds. They have a low chance to spawn in regular travel gates, but the chance is slightly increased in the bonus gates. Whether or not a foreign master spawns depends entirely on RNG as you travel between floors of the mystic world, but you can influence the type of master that can spawn on the next floor by the way you play on your current floor. (E.g. If you do certain things on Floor 1, that will affect which type of foreign master on Floor 2.)
All foreign masters will give you a reward for beating them, which differs for each type of master. If you happen to lose to them (which is likely, if you fight them too early), you will have one monster restored to 1 HP and they will all take several items from you, then give you a Chimera Wing to help you get back to GreatTree.
Priest
A priest may spawn on the next floor if you have collected every available item (including treasure chests) on your current floor.
Priests will fully heal your party after you beat them.
Merchant
A merchant may spawn on the next floor if you have seen the whole map of your current floor without having collected a single item.
Merchants will fill your empty inventory slots with random meat after you beat them.
Bard
A bard may spawn on the next floor if you have filled the map of your current floor and it has only 2 screens.
Bards will boost the (proportionally) lowest stat of each of your monsters by 20 if you beat them.
Wizard
A wizard may spawn on the next floor if you have filled the map of your current floor and it has a total of 16 screens.
Wizards will warp you forward 20 floors in the mystic world if you beat them. If you are in a world with less than 20 floors, they will warp you to the final floor. If you are on the final floor, they will warp you to the boss scene.
Warrior (Red/Yellow)
A warrior may spawn on the next floor if no other conditions have been fulfilled. As such, a warrior is the only type of foreign master who can spawn on the first floor of the mystic world, or after you leave a special room.
Of these foreign masters, Bards and Wizards have the highest priority, followed by Priests and Merchants, with Warriors having the lowest priority. What this means is that, for example, if you happen to fulfill the conditions required for a Priest and a Wizard to spawn (traverse all 16 screens of the floor, and pick up all items), then only a Wizard can spawn.
You can steal monsters from foreign masters; this will require the use of one or more RibMeats or, ideally, MarbledMeats. Monsters you obtain in this matter will have great stats, as well as skills they wouldn't normally be able to learn. Any kind of master can have any type of monster, predetermined by the *total* level of your current party. Add up the levels of your monsters, and where that number falls determines the monster pool that a foreign master can have.

Part 10: Credits
In the past, I always referenced a bunch of wikis and guides when playing Dragon Quest Monsters. I was inspired to make my own guide because I wanted one that contained all of the information I need - especially once I started the Delocalized hack, with a whole slew of new names that don't match what you'd find in the common guides and in the wikis. Still, they were useful as a reference when making this and I'll happily give credit where credit is due.
For the Monsters section, I heavily referenced the following Wiki page:
https://dragonquest.fandom.com/wiki/DWM_Breeding
For the Skills section, I cross-referenced this site: http://www.synapse.ne.jp/takata/dqm/magic.html
with Jimeous's Skills Guide on GameFAQs: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/gbc/197155-dragon-warrior-monsters/faqs/8160
For the Travel Gates section, I referenced this Wiki page:

For the Important NPCs section, I referenced this Wiki page:

For the Foreign Masters section, I referenced Jimeous's Foreign Trainers guide: https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/gbc/197155-dragon-warrior-monsters/faqs/8152
All other information comes from in-game NPCs plus my own experimentation and knowledge through repeated plays.
I hope you find this guide helpful!
